Principal’s Message

Kia ora

We are almost there, Term 1 done and dusted. But more big plans for next term, our Library is being set up over the holiday break so that it should be fully operational again from the start of Term 2.

We have signed up to perform at the Te Kiwa Nui festival in Term 3 so a performance group will begin preparing next term.

However we are sad to be farewelling our Wellbeing Specialist, Jenny Gosnell, she is heading overseas at this term.

Currently the union which supports our Teacher Aides and Admin staff (Support staff) is in negotiations with the government around pay and conditions. If you would like to support them there is information available at the school office.

Public Health Nurse

Our Public Health Nurse has advised us that there are currently alot of issues for children with a range of skin infections.

Please check out the information on this poster and of course if you have more concerns you can call the Healthline 0800 611 116 or make an appointment at your doctor’s.

Attendance

In 2024 our attendance data was

Regular Attendance (over 90%)                 51%

Irregular Absence     (80-90%)                   20%

Moderate Absence   (70-80%)                   11%

Chronic Absence      (less than 70%)          19%

We would like to see this improve for 2025 and have set a target of 70% of students attending regularly.

Our junior classes have been doing some practical investigations in maths, looking at symmetry, tally marks and patterning.

How to support learning during the holidays.

So with the holidays coming up it would be great for children to keep reading over the break, they will all being getting new Duffy books to take home on Thursday so will definitely have two new books to read.

But great reading and writing really starts with good oral language skills. Encouraging your children to re-tell stories, ask questions and play with rhyming words are all great ways to support their learning.

It doesn’t have to be in English either, there is lots of research that shows the stronger children are in a home language the stronger they can become in English.

Device time can also support learning with a range of great maths games and if all else fails have them run laps around the outside of the house (cross-country is early next term).
